Getting Rid of Stretch Marks
We all, at one point in our lives, may see a few stretch marks on our skin. That’s very okay and completely natural. If you are like me and want to fade them away, you should give these natural remedies below a try. First let us discuss what stretch marks are and then we will go on to explain which natural remedies work to repair our skin, why they do and exactly how to use them.
WHAT ARE STRETCH MARKS?
Stretch marks are irregular lines or streaks on the skin where it has been stretched or distended. These marks on our skin are actually scars that develop when our skin stretches or shrinks quickly. These abrupt changes cause the collagen and elastin in our skin to rupture, and as the skin heals from this rupture stretch marks appear.
WHAT CAUSES STRETCH MARKS?
Some common causes of stretch marks include pregnancy, weight gain, significant weight loss and sudden growth spurts such as puberty.
NATURAL REMEDIES FOR STRETCH MARKS:
EGG WHITES
Egg whites are highly nutritious for the skin, as they’re chock full of amino acids and proteins. They are known to lighten your scars, fading them pretty easily. Egg whites also help tighten the skin back to its orginal level, which reduces wrinkles.
HOW TO USE:
First you will separate the egg yolk and egg whites. Once you do, whip up the egg whites into a cream and evenly gently massage into the skin. After leaving it on the scars for about 15 to 20 minutes, rinse with warm water and pat dry.
LEMON JUICE
Lemon juice has powerful bleaching properties which really helps with stretch marks. It is also naturally acidic so it exfoliates the skin to peel off dead skin cells, and it is rich in vitamin C and citric acid which lightens scars. It is one of the best natural home remedies to fade stretch marks, as it quickly heals the skin.
HOW TO USE:
Gently rub the juice of one full lemon over your stretch marks in a circular motion and allow the fruit juice to absorb into your skin.
OLIVE OIL
Hydrating and healing damaged layers of skin is what olive oil is best at, as it has all the essential nourishment for the skin in regards to antioxidants, lubrication, vitamins, and minerals.
HOW TO USE:
Heat the olive oil in the microwave for a few seconds before gently massaging it into the stretch marks. Let this be absorbed by the skin without rinsing or washing it away.
ARGAN OIL
It is scientifically proven that argan oil renews and refreshes the collagen and elastin fibres in your skin. That’s music to our ears because stretch marks are caused by those two fibres ‘breaking’ and weakening. We want to focus on anything that can help with collagen and elastin, and argan oil does the trick. It is rich in vitamin E and antioxidant properties and really helps diminish stretch marks and other scars by healing and nourishing the skin.
HOW TO USE:
Gently message the argan oil into the damaged part of your skin and do not rinse it off, simply allow it to fully absorb into your skin. You can use it 2 to 3 times a day to help with the process of fading stretch marks.
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
This natural remedy is rich in acetic and magic acid, which both aid in lightening scars. Neinstein explains to Romper in an exclusive interview, “Apple cider vinegar’s antioxidant properties are believed to help prevent stretch marks that inflammatory conditions like pregnancy can create. A common at-home strategy is to fill a spray bottle with a cup of apple cider vinegar and spray it on the stretch mark areas at night, allowing it to dry and take effect. Anecdotally it seems to be helping.”
HOW TO USE:
Before bed, spray apple cider vinegar on the areas of skin that need it and let it be absorbed into the skin and air dry over night. Wash it in the morning and moisturize skin.
